Professeur au Collège de France, islamologue, historien, linguiste, sociologue, militaire, aventurier, écrivain, homme engagé… sa vie offre une amplitude exceptionnelle et en fait l’un des plus fascinants savants français du siècle dernier.\nCet islamologue catholique a joué un rôle de premier plan en faveur d’une meilleure reconnaissance de l’islam, dans le monde académique comme dans la société civile. Il a ainsi dédié sa vie de chercheur et de croyant à la compréhension de cette religion autre, déjà mal perçue à l’époque. Il est aussi et avant tout un grand mystique dont la spiritualité est fondée sur la notion d’hospitalité : « Pour comprendre l’autre, il ne faut pas se l’annexer, mais devenir son hôte. »\nEn 1922, Louis Massignon soutenait sa thèse monumentale : La Passion de Hosayn-ibn-Mansoûr, al-Hallâj, martyr mystique de l’Islam, exécuté à Bagdad, le 26 mars 922, étude d’histoire religieuse, qui a fait entrer l’étude du soufisme dans le champ académique. L’année 2022 marque aussi les 60 ans de la disparition de ce chrétien islamophile.\n Jalonnée de nombreux documents visuels, cette conférence vise à redonner toute la modernité et l’importance qu’il mérite à cet extraordinaire « passeur interreligieux ».\nManoël Pénicaud est anthropologue (CNRS) et membre de l’Institut d’ethnologie méditerranéenne européenne et comparative (IDEMEC) à Aix-en-Provence. Ses travaux interrogent la question de l’hospitalité et des interactions entre altérités religieuses en Europe et en Méditerranée, notamment dans certains sanctuaires.\nSon dernier ouvrage est une biographie renouvelée de l’islamologue français Louis Massignon : Louis Massignon. Le « catholique musulman » (Bayard, 2020) récompensé par la mention spéciale du Prix de l’Œuvre d’Orient 2021 et par le Prix Lyautey 2021.\nCitons aussi : Lieux saints partagés (collectif, Actes Sud-Mucem, 2015), Le réveil des Sept Dormants.
